Daniel Ruffin guarding Josh Young
Drake’s 72-71 loss to Bradley Tuesday had to sting the entire Bulldog locker room. Drake out played the Braves for 39 minutes, proving to be faster and more physical than the visitors from Peroia.
With 5 minutes left in the game Drake went into a ball control game and failed to score after Jonathan Cox tip in a rebound at the 4:57 mark. Most of the night Drake was able to dictate the tempo and proved to be much quicker than Bradley. But holding an 8 point lead with 4:57 to play the Bulldogs tried to slow the game and take the air out of the ball. What ended up happening is Drake took themselves out of “their” ballgame.
Drake had several chances to put the game away and even win at the buzzer. With :43 seconds remaining, and Drake holding a 71-70 lead, Adam Emmenecker grabbed an offensive board and kicked it out to Josh Young. Rather than hold the ball and take the game clock down to just a few seconds, Josh jacked up a 3-pointer that missed the mark.
At just like the game in Peroia Drake had a chance to win with only seconds remaining. Klayton Korver missed a 14 foot jumper from the left side with 3 seconds left and on the rebound Young missed a 10 foot fade away that glanced off the rim.
This was by far one of the best Missouri Valley games I have seen. I don’t know that I have seen better point guard play. The speed possessed by Josh Young and Josh Parker for Drake and Daniel Ruffin for Bradley is unreal. These three are playing in a different gear.
I have these two projected to meet again in a couple of weeks in the second round of Arch Madness. If that happens get your butt to St Louis.
