Motive in Thomas shooting
Sources tell 62andeven.com the older brother of a Aplington-Parkersburg senior football player is the gunman from this morning’s fatal shooting of football coach Ed Thomas.
The assailant in his ‘ 30s’ fired one shot, left and returned and unloaded four more shots.
Our sources say the brother was miffed that Thomas meted out unfair discipline to his brother and was way too tough on him and singled him out.
Mouth of the Midwest
What will Phil do next? Did Lefty let another US Open slip away? Marty breaks it down on 62andeven.com and ESPN 1700am The Champ. Take a listen…

Pardon the Interuption
Have you ever had one of those days when no matter what you try everything seems to slap you in the face? Monday was one of those days.
Our web host, temporary, had a server go down and it decided to take 62andeven.com with it for a long weekend. We are putting pieces back together and working to make sure that nonsense doesn’t happen again.
Anyway, we’re getting back and there is a lot to catch up on.
Even with the site down, Marty continued to be the hardest working man in Des Moines sports talk putting out a morning show and afternoon show. You should have seen it, serious you should have. Well not to worry, you still can.
Mouth of the Midwest – Marty and Tommy covered the final round of the US Open and more. Catch a reply of the whole show below:
Mad Dog Marty in the Morning – Marty breaks down the US Open, (spoiler Lucas Glover wins), MLB baseball and takes a look the upcoming schedule for the Cubs, Cards and Brewers. Click here to watch.
Since we were down today…
Here is a quick list of what you missed today:
* Lucas Glover wins the US Open fending off Lefty and David Duval, yeah David Duval. Duval, the former No. 1 player in the game, won a qualifer to join the field.
* Don Fehr is calling it quits. I just wish on the way out old Donny would wrestle Bud Selig in the steel cage match.
* Jon and Kate are headed to splitsville.
* Dolphins adding some rhythm to team – Gloria Estefan and Jimmy Buffett might be buying into the team.
* LSU takes first game of the CWS.
* Ran into this site over the weekend. Probably one of the most disturbing sites I have ever seen. Especially this one.
Shakin’ Jake…Bad News Barnes?

Marty has news on Jake and Harrison tonight on Mouth of the Midwest. Catch it during Late Night with David Letterman, 10:35pm on KCCI Channel 8.

This video will blow your mind
I had to watch it 3 times to figure out if it was real or not. It is real by the way.
Josh Womack during spring training this year.
Remember the Royal’s bird game from earlier this week
It turns out Zach Greinke and Coco Crisp weren’t the only one’s a little pissed at the seagulls for helping the Indians pull out the game. Add Aaron Smith to the group.
Smith figure a Greinke – Sowers match-up was easy pickins and placed $21,750 bet on the Royals at two Vegas casinos.
He stood to win nearly $38,000, which he said he planned to use to pay off his house or, perhaps, “just have a hell of a time at a casino with some cocktail waitresses.”
“I’m thinking about everything I’m gonna do with this money,” Smith says, “then next thing, I watch with a puckered (rear) as Greinke gives it up, then the sieve Kyle Farnsworth comes in, gives two baserunners, and then the (fudging) birds.”
“I’ve thrown rocks at three birds since that night,” he says. “I haven’t hit one, but I won’t stop until I do.”

Former Iowa Cub Mel Hall busted
Sad story involving former I Cubber Mel Hall.
Today, Hall was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old back in the late 90s. He was guilty on 3 counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and 2 counts of indecency with a child. Hall faces from probation to life in prison. Turns out he is also charged with molesting a 14-year-old at the same time.
Hall, who retired from playing professional baseball in 1996, was a basketball coach for a select team when he became close with the 12-year-old girl’s family. When he needed a place to stay in 1998, the girl’s parents let him stay in their home for a couple of months.
Hall’s accuser, now 23, took the stand Monday, describing what she believed at the time was a boyfriendlike relationship with her coach. It began with Hall exposing himself to her and her younger brother, she said.
“I trusted him. I honestly had no idea anything was inappropriate at the time,” the woman testified. “I looked up to him. I just thought this is how normal people act.”
But when the parents were away, Hall had, on occasion, stripped naked from the waist down, lain on his back and kicked his legs in the air in front of them, the girl and her younger brother testified. “We thought it was funny. I would duplicate what Mr. Hall did,” The brother said he said he considered Hall’s actions “like a game” and never brought them to his parents’ attention.
There is more to the testimony, you can read it at Star-Telegram.com.
What a horrible story. I remember going to see Hall play with Pat Tabler, Ty Waller and little Scottie Fletcher back in the early 80s at Sec Taylor. Hall hit .329 for the I Cubs in 1982 and went up to the Cubs in 1983.
It is sad to see people fall, but I am not going to spend to much time thinking about Mel. You mess with kids and you should be spending the rest of your life in a 10×10 cell.
[SIDE NOTE - The picture is from Larry Woolis web site. If you've been to an I Cubs game you've seen Larry. He has been the I Cubs photographer for over 25-years. Take a look at all of Larry's old Iowa Cubs photos.]
