Can the public at large be any more over-the-top, loose cannon-esque— in its criticism of the University of Iowa and the football programs?
Can we please consider the following:
Two ex-hawks are charged with felony sexual assualt and await trial…
While the time line is very fuzzy–and the re-opened investigation will likely solve this–head coach Kirk Ferentz removed messrs. Satterfield and Everson from the team upon learning of the allegatgions.
Secondly, the family of the victim made a choice to take a low-profile route and now may be having second thoughts about having done so. This is understandable given the trauma of the incident and the high-profile alleged assailants.
To me, the mother’s letters to the university, come at a time when, as a parent, I would want justice served on Satterfield and
Everson. I don’t think my first concern would be reform of University policy…that comes later.
Armed with convictions, with satterfield and Everson behind bars, are they then not better equipped to demand reforms, more transparency and accountabilty at every level of the University of Iowa?
The way it is unfolding now, only clouds and confuses the issues and, ironically, may aid the defense at the upcoming trials.
But the calls for the heads of Sally Mason, Gary Barta, Kirk Ferentz are a knee-jerk reaction by people who are either misinformed and bearing agendas…or perhaps both!
Marty has started his trek across Iowa on the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. He’ll be riding with Team Bag of Donuts and will be checking in throughout the week.
While he was gearing up he chatted about RAGBRAI with Team GoDaddy member Matt Lundberg and Christopher Strafford.
“Tweener Week”–the week between the NFL Conference Championships and the Super Bowl–usually a downer week for sports. Not this year with Tiger Woods’ 2008 debut on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California.
Torrey Pines’ South course will be the site for this year US Open in June so we do get a mini-preview of the Open do we not?
Why Zach Johnson would forego this chance to tune-up for a major is eye-brow raising, but he’s not alone. Tiger has won the Buick at Torrey five times (he grew up playing here) so the concession to his Tigerness should come as to big surprise. But you could rationalize a paid series of ‘practice rounds’…NO?
Was that not a technical glitch when The Golf channel opened it’s coverage of the Buick with Kelly Tilghman’s apology for the ‘lynch Tiger’ comment? Was on my TV as the first 10 seconds or so was silence. Too bad there wasn’t a glitch when she first blurted the comment.
Tube Talk: Golf channel today and CBS both Saturday and Sunday for the Buick.
NBA Triple-header Sunday: Boston @ Orlando, Cleveland @ Los Angeles and Denver @ Dallas. Combo ABC/ESPN
College hoops: Memphis/Gonzaga Noon (East) Saturday
SoundOff Sunday night WHO TV 10:30p Think they’ll be talking Drake?
Drake has got me really digging into their schedule and here’s what I’m landing on:
- 22 wins, two wins at the MVC tourney and a NIT bid.
Now, you want to get a little nutty and say they’ll play in the MVC title tilt–NCAA At-large would be a distinct probability.
Vikings will get the 6th seed NFC and I think they are dangerous–and it goes beyond Adrian Peterson.
The defense against the run is prolific and they can defend the pass. Look, Dallas is beatable–we know that—and Green Bay is capable of a clunker. Look, you want to eat chalk have at it. There is an upset brewing and the Vikes could be the ones.
Someone please email us Gumbel’s latest NFL Network gaffe.
This guy is great on HBO, but should be barred from the play-by-play booth.
Like Kyle Orton to keep the Bears in the game tonight. OK, I’m a homer.
Give Bob Ryan credit. He loved the Jets to cover before the weather went wacky in NE. Now, how do you call the Pats/Dolphins game Sunday? I think the Pats will roll by 4 or more TD’s.
Congrats to our buddy Connor Crawford who has been accepted at Yale for the fall off 08′. Crawford’s doing a little stat work for us at Iowa Energy home games when time allows.
WHO-TV 13 did a great localizing the “Mitchell Report”.
My moles say the weather in New England (just got hit with 6 plus inches) going to be bad for Sunday’s Jets/Patriots game. Foxboro is closer to Providence, R.I. than Boston and the coast won’t get hit by the N’or Easter as bad. I know, I sound like John McLaughlin! Still think Pats will put a major hurting on the Jets.
The Picks:
Patriots - 23 14-0, 35-3, 42-6 56-13
Are you seriously buying into this stuff that Belichik will ‘take it easy ‘ on the Jets? Don’t for a second.
Buffalo + 5 1/2 If I could only watch one this Sunday this would be it. Browns are tough at home. The NFL is better when Cleveland is good. Hey, anybody gonna start giving Romeo Crennel his due. Charlie Weiss?
Love to ask Brady Quinn what he thinks of the two coaches?
Jacksonville + 3 1/2 Weather factor a plus for Steelers. Low-scoring field goal fest. Jax makes a big play to win it.
NY Giants - 4 1/2
Manning is a INT-machine, but I think the Giants finally putting something good together at home.
Monday: We’ll look at Kyle Orton and Bears versus Vikes. This will be a decent game and the local interest here is obvious. Count me among those pulling for Orton to put up some big numbers.
This Weekend
Friday: Tiger’s Target World Golf Challenge (Golf Channel, 2pm)
Saturday: NCAA Div. 2 & 3 on (ESPN/ESPN2, 11am 3pm) N.W. Miss. St. is a fun team to watch and Mt. Union is an incredible D-3 story.
New York Times had a piece Sunday on how the US Open this June at Torrey Pines will include a bunch of average Joe’s teeing it up and have their sounds televised by NBC.
This a great idea and was born out of Tiger Woods’ comment last year when the conditions at Oakmont were such that his Tigerness professed a 10 handicapper couldn’t break 100.
I detest most reality TV, but this one has me hooked.
Iowa Energy wearing parent club Miami Heat unis Friday night at Wells Fargo against Sioux Falls. You can bid to buy one after the game with proceeds going to MD…
Mitchell Report out this week and the timing is suspicious. America is absorbed in the holiday season and trying to pay their mortgages. 60-80 names and very few, if any, will surprise—and trainers and clubhouse hands will be scapegoats. Joke City.
