Tiger Woods is better than you

By Jeff Jorgensen -

Ok. This is just getting silly.

Tiger playing in the first round of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play was 3-down through 13. Must be time to wake-up correct? The next four holes - birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle. Ball game.

Tiger parred the 18th to finish 1-up against JB Holmes.

In other first round play Zach Johnson lost 2-down to David Toms.

DirecTv to expand Masters coverage

By Jeff Jorgensen -

Can’t join Marty in Augusta for the Masters? We’ll fire up the DirecTV as they are going to add exclusive bonus coverage of the Masters this year.

DirecTv will premiere a Masters Mix Channel for all four rounds of play. It will include a channel devoted to Augusta’s Amen Corner (holes 11, 12 and 13) and one devoted to holes 15 & 16. Both of these channels will have dedicated cameras and announcers.

Another channel on the mix will be devoted to tournament highlights, and the final one will carry ESPN coverage from the first 2 rounds, and the CBS coverage of the final two rounds.

Weekend Primer/ US Open Preview?

By Marty Tirrell -

“Tweener Week”–the week between the NFL Conference Championships and the Super Bowl–usually a downer week for sports. Not this year with Tiger Woods’ 2008 debut on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California.

Torrey Pines’ South course will be the site for this year US Open in June so we do get a mini-preview of the Open do we not?

Why Zach Johnson would forego this chance to tune-up for a major is eye-brow raising, but he’s not alone. Tiger has won the Buick at Torrey five times (he grew up playing here) so the concession to his Tigerness should come as to big surprise. But you could rationalize a paid series of ‘practice rounds’…NO?

Was that not a technical glitch when The Golf channel opened it’s coverage of the Buick with Kelly Tilghman’s apology for the ‘lynch Tiger’ comment? Was on my TV as the first 10 seconds or so was silence. Too bad there wasn’t a glitch when she first blurted the comment.

Tube Talk:  Golf channel today and CBS both Saturday and Sunday for the Buick.

NBA Triple-header Sunday: Boston @ Orlando, Cleveland @ Los Angeles and Denver @ Dallas. Combo ABC/ESPN

College hoops: Memphis/Gonzaga Noon (East) Saturday

SoundOff Sunday night WHO TV  10:30p Think they’ll be talking Drake?

BestBet: Tiger to win Buick.

On Golf

By Marty Tirrell -

Sometimes your best round of golf starts before you tee off. Played Mahogany Run in St. Thomas–the only golf course on this island.

1:37p tee time moved up to 1:30p and got to play with two midwesterners’-Doug and Darby Miller. Go figure—another Miller.

KU alums–Darby now at Harvard doing Public Health studies; Doug a CPA in Westwood, KS.

Good players…greater people.

By the way, Devil’s Triangle —awesome.

Zach Johnson stands at tied 26th (out of 31) 1st round complete at the Mercedes-Benz on Kapalua. Double-bogey 5 on the par 3 whiped out birides on the 1st and 10th holes.

The defending Masters champ carded a 3 -over 76 on the par 73 layout.

Mercedes tees of the 08′ PGA Tour at Kapalua. Stuart Appleby 3-time defending champion and we’ll keep you posted on Zach Johnson. Only 31 players and sans Tiger and Lefty this year’s event is a wide-open affair.

Other notables not making it British Open champ Padraig Harrington and foreigner Adam Scott.

Vijay will be displaying a new swing and 13 others players are making their Kapalua debuts.

Par 73 with hilly, sloping greens–we’ll take a season-opening flyer on Candadian Stephen Ames.

Zach can contend and what a great way to start the year with a strong finish.

US Open goes ‘Reality TV’

By Marty Tirrell -

New York Times had a piece Sunday on how the US Open this June at Torrey Pines will include a bunch of average Joe’s teeing it up and have their sounds televised by NBC.

This a great idea and was born out of Tiger Woods’ comment last year when the conditions at Oakmont were such that his Tigerness professed a 10 handicapper couldn’t break 100.

Golf Digest has a sign up page:  www.gdopencontest.com

I detest most reality TV, but this one has me hooked.

Iowa Energy wearing parent club Miami Heat unis Friday night at Wells Fargo against Sioux Falls. You can  bid to buy one after the game with proceeds going to MD…

Mitchell Report out this week and the timing is suspicious. America is absorbed in the holiday season and trying to pay their mortgages. 60-80 names and very few, if any, will surprise—and trainers and clubhouse hands will be scapegoats. Joke City.

Random thoughts on a Friday

By Marty Tirrell -

This BCS nightmare has to end. Please, just set up a bracket with 12-16 teams, whatever –and play the thing off. The best submission this week was a well-thoughtout bracket from a listener and we’ll post a copy of it here next week. Then jump on the message boards here at 62andeven.com and lets hash this out.

The Hawkeyes have a big QB issue to deal with this off-season. Do we all really think Jake is the answer? Count me among those who hopes Coach Ferentz puts this thing up for grabs and may the best guy win.

When fans at Drake start pointing to a December RPI at #21 you have to shake your head. It means NOTHING!!! Drake needs to play meaningful games in March!!

Patriots and Steelers will be a dogfight Sunday. Pats survive it, but it won’t be easy.
Channel 8, in a no-brainer, opts for this game instead of Chiefs/Broncos. GM Paul Fredrickson, ah, gets it!!

Am I the only one who can’t wait for the PGA Tour to tee off next month? ZachWatch each week right here, we’ll be at Augusta for his defense and week-to-week we’ll have our takes.

Quick question? Think he wins A TOURNAMENT this year??? One? Any one?
