Is the Big 12 all show?

Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal today regarding the offensive output of the Big 12.

While a slew of Big 12 teams are offensive juggernauts, not one of the teams rank in the top 40 in team defense. Look at last weeks scores:

63-21, 58-0, 58-35, 49-35, 32-20 and 28-24. Not exactly defensive struggles.

Those ordinary defenses bode most ominously. Based on recent statistical history, this season’s national champion will not come from the Big 12. The last five Bowl Championship Series title-game winners all ranked among the country’s top 10 in total defense. (Southern California did rank 30th when it shared the 2003 title with LSU.) The Big 12, which boasts four top-10 teams in the new Associated Press poll, cannot account for a single defense among the nation’s top 40.

So is it bad defense in the Big 12 or great offenses out classing their defensive counter parts each week?
