Chops to Anahiem

Sources have told 62andeven.com that the Anahiem Ducks are buying the Iowa Chops and moving the team closer to Anahiem. In its place, the Minnesota Wild will be moving the Houston Aero team to Des Moines for 2011 season.

I agree sportstalk….Energy will enjoy a great year of Sat. night dates…then if hockey returns…. i want hockey here…this is not a good loss for the market…

This post does not mention WHEN a sale and relocation would take place. Based on rumors I have picked up, several NHL teams are unhappy with their current affiliations right now. Some are expiring and others are looking to move early. It is still possible that we will get an affiliate this season. The Chops aren't dead yet!
Expect an announcement once the Calder Cup finals end, just like last year.
Even though I'm a Wings fan, I would welcome the Wild with open arms. Any owner has to be better than Schlegel!

The Aeros have it great in Houston. Unless there's an NHL team to replace them, it'll never happen.

Face it, it's over Iowa. You couldn't hack it with two other teams, you ain't getting a third strike.

I heard this same rumor elsewhere a few days ago and believe there is some validity to it. Getting rid of the Schlegel Management aspect is a huge plus. Neither the local staff nor the fans failed hockey in Des Moines. The Schlegel management team (which is horrible)failed Des Moines with idiotic decisions and intentionally choosing to not pay their bills. Schlegels Teams – Iowa Chops (No affiliate for the 2nd time in 2 yrs), Tacoma Raniers (AAA baseball near the bottom of the PCL in attendance), and the Texas Tornado (Junior hockey dormant last year). Not exactly a stellar resume.

What the hell is this for real? Are you seriously telling me that I have to wait, as well as other fans, an entire two full AHL seasons until we MIGHT get the freaking Aeros to move here? This better me a F'n joke! Now does this 2011 mean the 2010-2011 season meaning only ONE YEAR without hockey or is this the 2011-2012 season which is a BS TWO YEARS?

This doesn't even make sense anymore. I really don't believe this. First off if this is really true then why the hell are the Iowa Chops hiring for at least three different major positions with the teams management/marketing. Go look for yourself on their site and the AHL job boards. It makes no sense to hire a bunch of local people from Des Moines/Iowa and then tell them pack their sh_t your moving to CA if you still want your job. If your really moving why waste your time filing positions with people that most likely won't move with the team.

Second why the hell would Anaheim want to buy this team? Why help the Schlegels get what they want when they still owe you how much money? Why not find another dormant AHL franchise to purchase and move. Why the hell help or furthur associate with the people that totally screwed you over by not paying. If this happens then Anaheim is only helping the Schlegels as they laugh all the way to the bank.

I will admit that I am not surprised that Anaheim wants their own team and close to CA. I read somewhere that all the west coast teams want their AHL teams west of the rockies to force the AHL to create a AHL west division. Most of them are annoyed by having their teams in the midwest/east coast. This seems to be heading towards reality. This is the reason that the Edmonton Oilers basically waste $300,000 a year to own an AHL franchise that does not play. They are waiting for the right time, along with other west coast teams, to all collectively place their teams at once in the west. That makes sense and I don't have a problem with it, but to have Anaheim buy this team from these douche bags is beyond retarded. If they want their own then they need to start fresh and do it themselves – the right way!

Teams in all sports are trending towards owning their affiliates!
Now, we have found out Houston has 4 years to go on their lease, but
look at the Des Moines situation??? So, stay tuned…hockey has to be seen as a 'long shot' for 09-10.

James, are you serious? Major positions? It looks like they have some publications job and a bunch of internships. The Chops laid off a bunch of people recently. I doubt updating their job board is at the top of their priority list right now. Additionally, who says Anaheim would want this staff?

I don't think you understand the way AHL franchises work. If Anaheim bought the franchise, they basically buy the rights to play in the AHL and that is about it. They aren't buying the Chops coaches, players, name, or staff and probably not assets or liabilities either. If they bought the franchise rights and put it in SoCal they would more than likely start from scratch. So, no matter which franchise they buy, it really has nothing to do with the "team". Anaheim owns the players that played here last year already. The Schlegels pay, or in their case, don't pay an affiliation fee to use Anaheim's players. That is really all an affiliation is. The Schlegels own the right to put a team on the ice in the AHL. Anaheim had a fee based agreement to provide players. The Schlegels still have the right to play in the AHL, but since they failed to pay Anaheim, they now have no players.

The publication job was from a year ago. I didn't see any dates on the internship positions that are posted, but I would bet those openings were from last season also.

Hockey I gotta ask when you said this posting was over a year old. If so then why does the bottom mention the following

"Time Commitment: September 4, 2009 through April 30, 2010 to include evenings and weekends as well as some holidays. Must be able to work games."

you also missed that the Schlegels do not have a right to ice a team because AHL teams MUST be affiliated with NHL teams in order to play.

But the Schlegels opened themselves up:
- They got themselves in debt to the Ducks.
- They are at risk of owing Polk County a ton of cash
- And they have no NHL affiliate, and thus can not play in the AHL(Due to AHL rules requiring an affiliate)

So, what is the easiest way out of this mess? let's realize that icing a team is not a high priority at this point. Avoiding financial pain is.

Simply, erase your debt to the Ducks by discounting your selling price of the team. include in the sales agreement an extra $12 million that goes to pay off Polk County and you walk away, wounded, but OK, with a few million in your pocket.

The issue at this point is the Schlegels have so damaged their reputation with their lack of payment to the Ducks that any other team would be silly to even consider working with them.

Reality is Schlegels have no choice but to sell, and whether they pay Polk County and the Ducks with the proceeds, or they discount their selling price and sell to the Ducks, the end result is the same. Des Moines is Losing their AHL team (at least for now)

If you think anyone is going to pay anywhere near $12M for the Schlegel's AHL franchise, you are sadly mistaken. They are going to lose their a$$e$ on this deal unless they find a way out of the Polk County contract or put a team on the ice. Even if they do put a team on the ice they still lose significant $ every year. To think they are going to walk away with a few million in their pocket after all of this is simply ridiculous.

No matter how this ends, it won't be pretty for Schlegel.
