Iowa Twosome ….a Story Line at Augusta

Augusta, Georgia – Two years ago little did we know. On a gray, wind-swept Easter Sunday, Zach Johnson wowed the world by winning the Masters. As time has marched on the idea that he ’stared down’ Tiger Woods is a stretch; who cares…HE WON! Fast forward to now (The 2009 Masters will have an Easter Sunday finish again) and Zach is being joined by Des Moines Jack Newman. If you overheard a conversation pitching a “Zach and Jack” show you might wonder if the Golden Bear was back for a final go around.

Well, our little Z and J show might just have a little juice before the weekend is out.

Zach, the One Hit Wonder, has a hit under his belt already in 09′…a BIG HIT as in Hawaii at the Sony Open. Johnson has also pecked at the leader board two other occasions this year and is primed for a run and the weather may play to his favor.

Newman, Hoover High and Michigan State, comes with the appointments of the Mid-Amateur Champion; should he make the Friday cut, he’ll single-handily buffer the Spartan hangover from Monday night at Ford Field. E. Lansing media is here as though Larry and Magic are teeing it up and Sir Charles is their swing coach!

Jack Newman is a big deal back in the Wolverine state!

Poised to pounce:
Tiger – I’m taking a dim view on his winning…brisk weather not suited to him; see British opens on two occasions and 2000 here.
Geoff Ogilvy – due for a Major breakthrough. Big issue: length off tees.
Phil Mickelson – he will be there in one of final three groups on Sunday. Hype here is for a Lefty-Tiger Sunday pairing, final group.
Padraig Harrington – going for three majors in a row. Bred for the elements; can he handle the pressure.
Sleeper: Stephen Ames – A rabbit a lot with quick early leader board
hops….Easter Bunny?

62 and even!
