ISU AD Jamie Pollard will have to demonstrate “sincerity” to get UBuffalo coach Turner Gill to take a look at the Clones’ heading coach spot.

This word from Buffalo News beat writer Rodney McKissic with KXnO.com today. He will be on the “Marty & Miller show at 4:30 this afternoon.

“A perfect fit”, said McKissic about Gill and ISU. “He’s a Big 12 guy at heart; and they’d be getting a winner, Cyclone fans will love this guy.”

A “head coaching slot” for Iowa State currently seems to be the place between being an assistant coach on a potential national championship team and being the butt of media jokes regarding Auburn:-)

I am hoping we land Gill. I think this would be the best fit for the Cyclone family at this point. Media has pegged us the bottom feeders of the big 12 along with being a black hole of coaching and we need to find a man that will put their entire heart and soul into the program and it’s success.

With Gill’s drive and dedication, coupled with the fact he would have the chance to come in and take over the program who’s former “leader” bailed at first sight of adversity and lead the team to bigger and better things going forward. Not to mention the fact that Gill was passed over by Auburn despite the glaring descrepancies in coaching resumes. He would have the opportunity to get the last laugh and lead this group of incredible young men, who feel cheated, to places they most likely would never have reached under the Chizik regime.

Chizik wouldn’t have done it at ISU. Next year would still be a re-building year. The players would be better, but the schedule doesn’t change much. It’s certainly conceivable that they would reach a bowl, but not likely. Then the following two years are brutal with the switch to Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech, along with Utah and Connecticut. The writing was on the wall. If Chizik stayed and didn’t succeed next year, he would have been fired anyway. This way we’ll be at least one year ahead of schedule and will be ready to kick ass once the schedule flips back over to Okie State, Baylor, and A&M in 2012.

What are the changes Phillip Bates returns to ISU? Rumorville had him leaving ISU because he had been talking to Turner Gill who at the time was presumed to be the next Syracuse head coach. That fell through, but if Gill returns to ISU, will Bates return as well? It would keep him from losing a year of eligibility. Gill would have no strings to Arnaud. Who knows, maybe Bates is the starter in ‘09?

Bates might be leaning towards Ohio U. A return to Ames in highly unlikely; the clones want to keep Tiller in the fold amid the Chizik fallout.
