Outback – January 1, 2009
Iowa is headed to its 5th January 1st bowl in 7 years as they take on the South Carolina Gamecocks, coached by Steve Spurrier.
South Carolina finished 7-5 with loses to Vanderbilt, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Clemson. They were outscored 87-20 in their final two games at Florida and Clemson. The Gamecocks have a 2-0 record in the Outback Bowl.
South Carolina was the worst in the SEC averaging 98-yards a game on the ground. They were third in the league through the air averaging 218-yards per game. On defense the Gamecocks led the SEC in pass defense giving up only 160-yards per game and were middle of the pack giving up 129-yards per game.
There will be a little quarterback controversy going into the game as Spurrier announced after their season ending loss to Clemson that Stephen Garcia would take over for the struggling Chris Smelley.
62andeven will have more Bowl coverage and Marty will be in Tampa for the game.
