Top NCAA Comebacks

By Jeff Jorgensen -

SI.com has a list of their top 10 Greatest NCAA Comebacks. Amazing, the State of Iowa, with our limited NCAA appearances from the Big Four scores 2 out of the top 10 spots.

Rolling in at No. 1, Hampton over Iowa State.

The NCAA tournament is remembered for its upsets, but comebacks are also a big part of the equation. Here’s a look back at some of our favorites, beginning with Hampton, which was down by as many as nine with seven minutes left in a 2001 contest. The 15th-seed, coached by Steve Merfeld, went on a 14-2 run to topple second-seed Iowa State 58-57. It was the first tournament appearance for Hampton, which became the fourth 15th seed in NCAA history to advance.

Iowa makes an appearance at No. 9 with its 2nd half collapse to UNLV in the 1987 Elite Eight game.

After trailing by as many as 18, Jerry Tarkanian’s UNLV Rebels went on a furious second-half comeback to defeat Iowa 84-81. Gary Graham sealed the win with a pair of free throws.

Coach of the Year, it’s an Iowa thing

By Jeff Jorgensen -

keno.jpgOk, the pressure is officially on Greg McDermott and Ben Jacobsen.

You see, to coach college basketball in the State of Iowa you must have a little Henry Iba Coach of the Year award dangling around your neck.

Ok, maybe not but it certainly seems that way.

Keno was named the Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award by the U. S. Basketball Writers Association Tuesday. Davis led the Bulldogs to a MVC regular season and conference tournament championship.

Drake plays Western Kentucky Friday in Tampa. You can watch it live on KCCI at 11:30a.m., or you can watch it on your computer via the NCAA March Madness on Demand.

Enough of the Nielson ratings, sweeps whatever. Channel 8 and 13 need to fight it out like El Paso stations, KDBC-TV and KVIA-TV, drag race your live trucks.

Missouri Valley Champions

By Jeff Jorgensen -

Drake University quieted all critics this past weekend as they sailed through the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis. Drake capped the three day run with a 79-49 pounding of number 2 seed Illinois State.

Dick Enberg and Bob Wenzel gave the Bulldogs some love after the game.

The Bulldogs used balance scoring and tenacious defense to cruise to the title. Here is a little video taste of the post game celebrations.

Getting ready for Mo Valley

By Jeff Jorgensen -

I haven’t been to the Missouri Valley Tourney for a few years. The last time I was there it was held in the Saviss Center. With the building now being called the ScottTrade Center, I hopped on over to their website to see if any changes had been made since my last visit.

While bouncing through the site I came across a video on how they convert the arena for hockey. Very cool video.

To make ice, the floor is chilled to 24 degrees and then a thin sheet of water is poured over the floor. This process is repeated every 20 minutes until a ¾” sheet of ice is made. It takes approximately 12-18 hours to make a ¾” sheet of ice. When 1/3 of the ice thickness is completed, white paint is coated over the ice. When 2/3 of the ice is frozen, the lines and logos are painted onto the ice, then the final 1/3 is laid. During hockey season the ice is left down and is covered with a Styrofoam insulated plastic-coated floor and the basketball floor or concert is placed on top. For the circus the ice is removed and then re-made after the final performance.Icy Facts:

* An average of 50,000 gallons of water are used annually to form the ice floor.
* This is more water than is contained in four standard-size swimming pools.
* The ice rink floor features more than 13 miles of one-inch steel piping.
* The floor has over 2,200 welds in the solid concrete slab.

For more information visit the ScottTrade Center site.
